A Chetak helicopter of the Indian Air Force (IAF) toppled when doing an emergency landing while in a training sortie from Bamrauli close to Allahabad today. The two pilots are safe. The helicopter toppled as soon as the pilots tried a forced landing right after it created a technical snag, sources in IAF stated.
The IAF has directed a court of inquiry (COI) to find out the cause of the accident. The sources stated the aircraft toppled while the pilots tried to force land it on an bumpy field. The helicopter was on a schedule training sortie from Bamrauli airport, near Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh.
The Army has been preparing to phase out the aging fleet of Chetak and Cheetah helicopters, which has claimed a number of lives across the past couple of years. The Ministry of Defence has been attempting to procure new helicopters.
