Dr. Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai born on 12 August 1919 was an Indian physicist. He is considered as the father of India’s space program.
When the country became independent from the clutches of the British, then science studies were not often in India. Due to slavery, there was a belief in the minds of the people that Indian people are not talented. Searching or doing new research is the work of countries like England, USA, Russia, Germany, France. So, even after being brilliant, Indian scientists were not able to do anything special. But, after acquiring independence, the environment of the country changed. In such a case, the name of India in the world on the basis of their hard work and discovery, Dr. Vikram Sarabhai’s name is taken with great respect. He not only did the serious research himself but also encouraged the youth to come in this area and encouraged new people. Dr. Kalam, former President of India, is one of such people.
Dr. Sarabhai was born on August 12, 1919, in Karnavati (Ahmedabad, Gujarat). Father Ambalal ji and mother Sarla Bai gave good values to Vikram. His education started at the School of Montessori. Sarabhai had a special interest in mathematics and science. They were always curious to learn new things. Ambalal ji belonged to many prominent people of the country. People like Rabindranath Tagore, Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr. Chandrashekhar Venkataraman and Sarojini Naidu stayed at their home. For this reason, Vikrama’s thinking became very widespread since childhood.

He went to Cambridge University for undergraduate education and took the title of National Science of Tripos in 1939. After World War II broke out, he returned to India and conducted a light related research in the direction of the famous scientist Dr. Chandrasekhar Venkataraman in Bangalore. When it was discussed all over, Cambridge University honored him with a D.Sc title. Now his research papers are published in the world-renowned research journals.
He has now worked in Research centers at Dikanal and Trivandrum in Karnavati (Ahmedabad). He is married to renowned dancer Mrinalini Devi. His special interest was in space programs. They wanted India to send it to its satellite space. For this, he established rocket launch centers in Thumba and Mr. Harikota near Trivandrum. Dr. Sarabhai wanted to see India’s rural life evolve. Through the Nehru Development Institute, they played an important role in the advancement of Gujarat. He was president and a member of many science and research institutes of the country and abroad. Even after obtaining international fame he continued to cooperate with the researchers of physics at Gujarat University.
Dr. Sarabhai went to Thumba on 20th December 1971 with his colleagues. There was a launch of a rocket from there. After seeing the preparations throughout the day, he returned to his hotel, but suddenly he died on the same night.
